§ 18-83. Definitions.

  • The following definitions shall apply to words used in this article. The definitions of words and phrases not defined in this section shall be taken from section 1-2 of this Code and the state Administrative Code or, if not defined therein, the current edition of Webster's New International Dictionary:

    Addition means new construction performed on a dwelling which increases the outside dimensions of the dwelling.

    Alteration means a substantial change or modification other than an addition or minor repair to a dwelling or to systems involved within a dwelling.

    Department means the state department of industry, labor, human relations and commerce.

    Dwelling means the following:

    (1)

    Any building, the initial construction of which is commenced on or after the effective date of the ordinance from which this article was derived, which contains one or two dwellings, units, or

    (2)

    An existing structure, or that part of an existing structure, which is used or intended to be used as a one-family or two-family dwelling.

    Dwelling unit means a structure, or that part of a structure, which is used or intended to be used as a home, residence or sleeping place by one person or by two or more persons maintaining a common household, to the exclusion of all others.

    Minor repair means repair performed for maintenance or replacement purposes on any existing one-family or two-family dwelling that does not affect room arrangement, light and/or ventilation, access to or efficiency of any exit stairways or exits, fire protection, or exterior aesthetic appearance, and that does not increase a given occupancy and use. No building permit is required for work to be performed that meets the definition of a minor repair.

    One-family or two-family dwelling means a building structure that contains one or two separate households used, or intended to be used, as a home, residence, or sleeping place by an individual or by two or more individuals maintaining a common household, to the exclusion of all others.

    Person means an individual, partnership, firm or corporation.

    Uniform dwelling code means those Administrative Code Provisions, and any amendments, revisions or modifications thereto, contained in the following chapters of the Wisconsin Administrative Code:

    (1)

    (2)

    Wis. Admin. Code Ind Comm Ch. 21—Construction Standards.

    (3)

    Wis. Admin. Code Ind Comm Ch. 22—Energy Conservation Standards.

    (4)

    Wis. Admin. Code Ind Comm Ch. 23—Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning Standards.

    (5)

    Wis. Admin. Code Ind Comm Ch. 24—Electrical Standards.

    (6)

    Wis. Admin. Code Ind Comm Ch. 25—Plumbing and Potable Water Standards.
